Course Description

This Search Engine Optimization course is designed to help students become proficient in SEO using today’s leading platforms. The course will cover Search Engine Optimization best practices, On-Site SEO, Off-Site SEO, Technical SEO, SEO Audits, and today's leading SEO tools. Students will learn through lectures, guest speakers, presentations, and hands-on applications the best practices and strategies of SEO. After the completion of this course, students should be able to obtain an entry-level position as a Search Engine Optimization Specialist. (Prior to Fall 2025 this course was TEDM 1100.)

Justification

Digital Marketing is a 5-star job, and since many digital marketing jobs can be done remotely, this will open up a strong career path for Central Utah. Search engine optimization is an essential skill for digital marketers to master.

This is a required course in the new Digital Marketing and Analytics program.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will learn why search engine optimization is an important part of a company's overall marketing strategy.
  2. Students will learn search engine optimization key terminology and definitions.
  3. Students will learn when and how to use search engine optimization to increase website rankings.
  4. Students will learn search engine optimization best practices and strategies.
  5. Students will practice on-site, off-site, and technical SEO on their personal websites.
  6. Students will perform site audits for clients and competitor audits.
  7. Students will become proficient at using the Search Engine Marketing Tools. (exp. Ahrefs & SEMRUSH)

Course Content

The course will cover:
- Search Engine Optimization best practices,
- On-Site SEO,
- Off-Site SEO,
- Technical SEO,
- SEO Audits, and
- today's leading SEO tools.

The course is designed to foster talent in all students. Students will be encouraged to share personal experiences and a wide variety of examples will be presented to help students understand the global effect of marketing. Examples of how to market to a variety of groups and markets may be included.
