Course Description

This is a music major course which teaches the fundamentals of piano playing at an intermediate level. This course will help cultivate familiarity and fluency with intermediate level piano techniques, rhythms, music notation, and intermediate performance pieces.

Justification

This course continues the music major's progress toward piano proficiency, which is a requirement for all National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited institutions. Similar courses are offered at other NASM accredited institutions in Utah and throughout the country.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate intermediate level piano technique.
  2. Students will be able to harmonize given melodies.
  3. Students will be able to to transpose melodies and accompaniments.
  4. Students will be able to read selected literature from sight.

Course Content

This course continues the development of functional keyboard skills for music majors, emphasizing sight-reading, harmonization, transposition, improvisation, and score reading. Students will refine technique, coordination, and expressive control while applying keyboard skills to theory, ear training, and ensemble contexts. Instruction focuses on building fluency and musical independence through varied repertoire and practical musicianship exercises.
