Justification

NASM accredited music programs are required to offer ensembles for music majors every semester as part of the BMCM degree program. Choirs provide vocal training, sharpen musical skills and create unique opportunities to collaborate with other students towards a common goal. Similar ensemble classes exist at most other colleges and universities.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to accurately and artistically perform the music selected by the director.
  2. Students will be able to articulate the textual meanings of the compositions. Students will be able to paraphrase foreign language texts.
  3. Students will be able to utilize music learning techniques like solfege and rhythmic skills to assist mastery of selected repertoire.
  4. Students will be able to articulate understanding of the assigned repertoire's cultural and historical context.

Course Content

Music will be chosen from all periods of music history and from all levels of difficulty within the ability of the current group. The skills of sight-singing and rhythmic reading will be taught through daily exercises and through rehearsal of the music. Proper vocal techniques will be discussed and applied. Students will learn about the historical and cultural context of music being studied.
