Course Description
This course teaches the fundamentals of playing and teaching the single reed instruments of the woodwind family. This course is required for students seeking K-12 certification in music education.
Justification
This course is an important requirement in an instrumental music education degree. Similar courses exist in all music education programs. It is required for Snow College students who are seeking K-12 licensure through our partnership with Weber State University.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to play basic exercises and solos on the clarinet and saxophone.
- Students will be able to teach basic concepts of clarinet and saxophone playing.
- Students will be able to diagnose and fix common problems in beginning to intermediate saxophone and clarinet player's performances.
- Students will be able to summarize the essential history of the clarinet and the saxophone.
- Students be able to identify teaching resources available in the form of books, articles, websites, people, and businesses
Course Content
This course prepares students to teach clarinet and saxophone in the K-12 classroom. Students will cover the basics of playing clarinet and saxophone including embouchure, breath support, position, fingering, and intonation.
