Course Description
This course provides an ensemble experience on a variety of percussion instruments. Available only to music majors who are pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree or by permission of instructor. Audition required. This course may be repeated for credit.
Justification
This course will provide students with opportunities to explore and experience standard percussion ensemble literature. Courses like this are taught at all NASM accredited institutions both in the state and across the country. This is similar to brass chamber, woodwind chamber, and string chamber music courses.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Upon completion of each semester of this course, students will be able to accurately perform the rhythms, melodies and harmonies of the music selected by the director.
- The student will be able to perform essential skills as part of a section, including, proper intonation blend and balance and show improvement in both speed and accuracy of literature learning as measured by small group assessment.
- The student will be conversant in the selected music's historical setting as well as the stylistic, expressive, and formal qualities associated with the particular era of music history.
- The students will demonstrate integration of skills and knowledge gained in culminating performances.
Course Content
Students will learn the standard percussion ensemble literature from the contemporary era. In addition, students will be taught correct sticking and hand techniques on a variety of percussion instruments. They will also learn a variety of styles of music including:• African;• Afro-Cuban;• Jazz; Brazilian;• other South American styles.
