Course Description
This course develops English language learners’ ability to write organized, coherent academic essays. Instruction emphasizes academic tone, vocabulary precision, and control of complex grammatical structures. Students will develop vocabulary knowledge in CEFR B1 and B2 levels. This course is cross-listed with CED 1051 (Level 3 Composition – Continuing Education).
Justification
The ESL Department at Snow College provides a four-level writing sequence that prepares non-native speakers for college-level English composition. ESL 1051 serves as the advanced composition course in the pre-academic sequence, emphasizing paragraph integration, organizational coherence, and control of complex grammar. Completion of this course equips students with the writing proficiency necessary for Level 4, where they synthesize sources and apply research skills.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Upon successful completion of ESL 1051, students will be able to compose organized, coherent academic essays of four to five paragraphs that demonstrate unity, logical flow, and appropriate rhetorical structure.
- Students will be able to apply complex grammatical structures and academic vocabulary accurately, such as adjective clauses, complex sentences, and parallel structure, while maintaining an academic tone.
- Students will be able to revise and edit essays for organization, coherence, and grammar, demonstrating the ability to use transitions, specific vocabulary, and descriptive language to enhance clarity and style.
Course Content
Instruction focuses on developing academic writing skills through four- and five-paragraph essays in a variety of styles. Instruction covers thesis and paragraph development, transitions, organization, grammar, coherence, and revision for academic tone and precision. Assessments may include grammar exercises, multi-draft essays and timed writing tasks.
Key Performance Indicators: The following ranges will be used for the purpose of assessment. In order to pass the course, students must demonstrate a B mastery of course materials.
