Gordon R. Staker- 1958 Alum
- Where are you currently employed? I am currently retired after 37 years of government service with the Bureau of Land
Management U.S.D.I., spending several years with the Soil Conservation Service U.S.D.A.
and military service.
- What are your hobbies? My wife and I wanted to spend our retirement years serving missions for the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We have served in the Russia Moscow Mission,
the Hawaii Honolulu Mission, the New York Rochester Mission and The Ohio Cleveland
Mission. I now enjoy gardening, family history research and temple service.
- How did Snow College contribute to your accomplishments?I was elected student body president of Snow College for the school year 1957-58,
which helped me develop greater leadership skills. I was nominated as student trainee
with the Soil Conservation by J. Elliot Cameron during my sophomore year at Snow College,
to which I was selected. This set the direction of my career in Natural Resource Management.
I married fellow student, Beverly Graham of Fairview; while at Snow College. She was
also a graduate of Snow College Class of 1957. Also, I graduated from the Snow College
LDS Institute of Religion, which helped prepare me for church service.
- What is your most memorable moment at Snow College? I was asked to play a trumpet solo at the inauguration of J. Elliott Cameron as president
of Snow College. This rendition was completely memorized and went very well. This
was a moment I will always cherish.
- What additional information would you like for other alumni to know about you? I attended Utah State University 1958-1960 graduating with a degree in Natural Resource
Management; graduated from Utah State LDS Institute of Religion 1960; began career
with the Soil Conservation Service; activated with the Utah National Guard during
the Cuban Missile Crisis with 115th Engineer Battalion; transferred employment to
the Bureau of Land Management following military discharge. I Served as Area Manager
in the Cedar City and Escalante Resource Areas; selected for the Department of Interior's
Management Training Program in Washington D.C.; served as District Manager of the
Baker Oregon District of the BLM; served as Branch Chief of the Range, Wildlife, and
Watershed programs in the Oregon-Washington State Office BLM; received the Department
of Interior Meritorious Service Award; retired with 37 years of Federal Service in
1995, while serving as manager of the Cedar City District BLM. My wife and I are parents
of five children, 22 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
