Exploring Majors and Careers
Theare are two approaches to choosing your major:
1. Major First
- Research the programs offered at Snow College
- Research the majors at your transfer institution
- Use the online catalog to explore course descriptions for courses that sound interesting
- Take an introductory course in a major that interests you
- Take the Career Decisions course (GNST 1500)
- Use Degree Works to run a what-if analysis on majors
- Speak with professors or advisors for different majors
Consider these questions as you explore majors:
- How does this major match your interests, abilities and values?
- Do the courses in the major sound interesting? Why?
- What are the admission requirements for the major?
- What career opportunities are available for someone with this major?
- What are the pre-requisites offered at Snow College to prepare me for my transfer
institution?
- Does choosing this major lengthen or shorten my time at Snow?
2. Career First
- Explore online career resources like O*Net and the Occupational Outlook Handbook to
learn about tasks and work environments of careers
- Interview or shadow a professional in the field to understand the day-to-day of the
career
- Work in an internship or part-time job related to the career path
- Meet with the Career Center or your academic advisor
- Join a club or attend student activities to expand your network
- Take a service learning course at Snow
- Join Utah Health Scholars to learn more about Graduate Health Care paths
Consider these questions as you explore careers:
- What is the typical day of work for someone in this career?
- What important qualities does a person need to be successful in this career?
- Does the salary match your values for the life you want to live?
- Will there be many or few positions in this field in the future?
- Are positions in this field available where you’d like to live?
- What major would best connect to this career/field?
