Summer Snow Information

Nestled in the breathtaking Sanpete Valley, Snow College Visual Arts provides higher education training annually to students on its Ephraim, Utah campus. Summer Snow Visual Arts Workshops have grown naturally as an extension of the school’s fundamental, mission of excellence, by providing progressive training in art practice and through the promotion of a visual dialog between artists in a variety of creative disciplines.

The origins of Summer Snow trace back to 1974. Co-founders Osral Allred and Carl Purcell introduced Summer Snow as a supplemental teaching environment outside of regular college semesters courses. Early workshops were designed to provide participants with experiences in the fundamentals of design and composition and provided vital technical approaches to art production specific to their dominant discipline of watercolor.

Throughout the years, Summer Snow has sponsored many superb artists as visiting resident masters. Workshop offerings have been expanded to connect to a wider array of participant interest and have included, animation, bookmaking, ceramics, digital media, drawing, jewelry & small metals, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and other studio-based disciplines. In addition to studio workshops, Summer Snow has also sponsored professional development workshops aimed at providing invaluable, practical information on marketing, self-publishing, social media practices, portfolio organization and presentation, portfolio/box construction, and framing and matting practices. You are invited to share in the discourse with dynamic artists and art professionals for two, weeklong, early June intensives and experience the warmth of Summer Snow.

 

Tentative Itinerary

Each Summer Snow course will consist of five days of instruction according to the following schedule:

*All workshops break each day at 11:15 am and participants are invited to gather in a lecture hall to listen to workshop instructors conduct art talks.

 

Academic Credit

Each participant will receive one Snow College academic credit per the completion of each workshop. Individuals who teach in the Utah Public School System are eligible to use this professional development opportunity towards their USHE relicencsure.

 

Food

It is the responsibility of workshop participants and faculty to take care of their own meals. Ephraim offers eating establishments ranging form fast food, to ethnic cuisine, and various grocery store options. A list of local dining options will be provided at check-in.

 

Supplies list

Each participant pays a studio fee that covers some materials, model fees, and studio maintenance specific to each course. Please note that Snow College is located in rural Ephraim, Utah and is about an hour from a bona fide art supply store, so prepare accordingly. The Snow College Campus Store, Walmart, and local hardware stores do have some supplies but participants should not rely on these sources, especially for specialized tools and equipment. In addition to what is supplied through the studio fee, each student should bring tools and supplies according to each instructor’s recommendations. A materials list will be sent to participants, via email, six weeks prior to the workshops.

 

Lodging

If you need housing, you can book a room at Park Place Apartments for $20 per bed /night or $40 /night for a private room by calling 435-283-6143 (ask for Amy). All housing is adjacent to campus in private apartment complexes. Bedding, towels, toiletries, etc., are not provided, so you will need to bring those items.

 

Fitness

The Snow College Activity Center is open daily from 5:30 AM to 10 PM for the use of public patrons during Summer Snow. Amenities include, indoor swimming, racquetball, volleyball, wallyball, basketball, indoor track, indoor soccer, and a fitness center. Registration & Payment

The cost of each workshop is $425.00/week plus a $25.00-$75.00 studio fee for tools, supplies, model fees, and studio maintenance. Participants will receive a list of tools and supplies to bring with them to the workshop. Space is limited and participants may register through June 1st. Refunds are available up to May 1st with a $50.00 processing fee. All major credit cards are accepted. Official enrollment in each course will become official upon payment.
