The Human Machine

The human body is a complex and fascinating machine. In this workshop we will explore the complexity of the human form through the historic process of Écorché. The word écorché means “flayed or skinned” and is usually applied to an animal or human model with the skin removed. Class time will be devoted to the production of a reduced life anatomical sculpture stressing the intricate relationship of human muscle and bone. The superficial layer of muscles will be our focus throughout the course of this workshop. Each student will sculpt the muscles of the body using clay to understand their character and placement, and how they influence the visible form. Lectures and drawing projects will reinforce the study of human anatomy and its importance to the practicing artist. This course is open to participants at any level and would be an excellent companion to Brad Taggart’s, Foundations of Figure Sculpture course, during week two of Summer Snow.
