Structure, collecting, organizing and display are aspects I embrace in my studio life and have in common with a small drab bird from Australia. Bower Book will explore the methods and techniques used to create sculptural books. You may wish to build a bower to hold a book or the book itself will be the bower to hold collected treasures. Participants are encouraged to bring their own found objects, materials and books to combine with wood, mica and handmade papers. Wood surface treatments including distressing, burning, painting and polishes will all be demonstrated. And you will also learn the ins and outs of using mica. You will also learn a fourth century Ethiopian binding style that has withstood the test of time. This elegant sewing structure, combined with wooden covers, opens a wide range of possibilities for both the beginner and the advanced bookbinder.
